Frances L. Hampf

On June 20, 2013, Frances L. Hampf, of Palm Beach Shores, died peacefully at the Chatsworth at PGA National after a lengthy illness. She was in her 90th year. Frances was born on June 27, 2013, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to Fred Cecil and Myrtle Woods Knight. After graduating college in Tennessee with a B.S. in chemistry, biology and math, she received her M.S. in zoology and chemistry in 1948. Frances served as secondary school level science educator in grades 6 thru 12, in Tennessee, Kansas and Florida, culminating as Chairman of the Science Department from 1960 to 1985 at Terry Parker High School, Jacksonville, Florida. During her almost four decades in science education, she won numerous local and state teaching awards, and was heavily involved with developing science teaching and testing standards in Florida and, at the national level. Her joy was directing many students' research activities and participating as regional director and national judge in extracurricular science programs. She was a member of, and leader of numerous scientific and teacher organizations including the American Chemical Society; National Science Teachers Association; National Science Supervisors Association and the Florida Association of Science Teachers, among many others. After retirement, she moved from Jacksonville to Palm Beach Shores and enjoyed very extensive travels to over one hundred countries with her husband, Frederick E. Hampf, Sr., whom she married in 1989. Frances was preceded in death by her husbands Raymond Stivers, and more recently, Frederick E. Hampf, Sr., in 2011. She is survived by step-sons, Frederick E. (Joan) Hampf, Jr., MD., of Avalon, New Jersey and Andrew W. (Carol) Hampf of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
